Song Lyrics & Internal Conflict

Directions:

A. As John prepares to finally reveal his secrets to save his wife in Act III, choose any song that you think allows us as readers to dive into the internal conflict of ONE character in The Crucible Act II.

B. Choose one stanza or line from that song to dissect, pick apart and connect to the character's inner thoughts (we will never know these thoughts, because it's a play! You'll have to inference!)

Example:
Ex--Elizabeth Proctor
Song-Adele--"Take it All" by Adele
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=snU9vQNOkHw&list=RD02snU9vQNOkHw
Song Lyrics:
Didn't I give it all,
Tried my best,
Gave you everything I had,
Everything and no less?
Didn't I do it right?
Did I let you down?

But go on and take it,
Take it all with you.
Don't look back
At this crumbling fool.
Just take it all
With my love,
Take it all
With my love.

Analysis:
At the opening of Act III, Elizabeth must be waiting inside the dark jail cell, cramped with the other accused witches, thinking about her mistakes, her life and especially, John. I wonder if she feels betrayed as Adele does, when all she did was be a wife who was loyal, dutiful, bearing children. Adele says  “Didn't I give it all,/Tried my best,/Gave you everything I had,/Everything and no less?”
She says "Take it, take it all" as John has not only stolen her dignity by humiliating her with his affair with Abigail; his stupid mistake, moments of lust, might cost Elizabeth her life. Her pride, her husband and her life may be taken by lust.
Take it all, take it all—will Elizabeth give her life to Abigail? Will she forfeit or stay true to her moral code?

  1. Song : Unfaithful- Rihanna

    Crucible character: John Proctor

    Analysis:
I think this song almost perfectly describes john’s internal conflict. This is because of the line “And I don't wanna do this anymore, I don't wanna be the reason why, And every time I walk out the door, I see him die a little more inside, And I don't wanna hurt him anymore, I don't wanna take away his life.” This is because in the crucible john proctor’s wife is accused of being with the devil because the accuser, Abigail, is someone who the husband had an affair with. In the play, proctor had to make a decision of confessing to the court of committing adultery with Abigail to try to prove that the accusations made against elizabeth are false. In addition, in the play he says, “I will not give my wife to vengeance!” So he doesn't want elizabeth to die because of his affair and Abigail’s revenge.

Quote from crucible: “ I will not give my wife to vengeance!” pg 66

    part of lyrics:
I don't wanna take away his life
    I don't wanna be
    A murderer
    Our love, his trust
I might as well take a gun and put it to his head
    Get it over with
    I don't wanna do this
    Anymore
    Uh
    Anymore
And I don't wanna do this anymore
I don't wanna be the reason why
And every time I walk out the door
I see him die a little more inside
And I don't wanna hurt him anymore
I don't wanna take away his life
    I don't wanna be
    A murderer
    A murderer
    No no no no
    Yeah yeah yeah yeah

    1. I agree with your reasoning and song of choice! I think the two go together almost perfectly. I also feel like this song can fit in slightly with Elizabeth back in Act II before she had been taken into custody. I feel like it can fit in to the beginning when John is sitting at the kitchen table and he is internally feeling the guilt of his affair but accusing Elizabeth that she always brings it up. I feel like these song lyrics can go with Elizabeths thoughts if she were to be the one feeling guilty of always bringing up the affair , because I believe she hasn’t been over the affair nor really forgived him

    2. I can't stress how much I love Rihanna!! Excellent song choice. However, I didn't expect you to relate these lyrics to John Proctor. I see your reasoning for it. I would have gone a different path and relate this to Elizabeth. When I was reading over the song lyrics, it made sense to me that this would be what Elizabeth is thinking of about John. Especially when Rihanna goes "I see him die a little more inside". This connects to the scene when she tells him that he is the only one judging him.

    3. I love how this song from Rihanna was used. I feel like this song relates to how John feels about the whole situation with Elizabeth. He felt guilty for his affair with Abigail. But personally, i think it relates to how Elizabeth feels more. Since, she still hasn't really forgived him.

    4. This is such a good song, i was going to pick it too. I do agree with you this song definitely describes Johns interal conflict because he was guilty for cheating on Elizabeth with abigial and deep down inside it was killing her because she had a feeling.

    5. I agree with you that this song relates to John and his internal conflict. His situation with Elizabeth and him committing adultery with Abigail. The song is describing how he basically does not want to cause the "death" of their relationship. He knows the affair hurt Elizabeth in numerous ways.

  2. Character: Mary Warren

Song: “Heaven Knows I’m Miserable Now” by The Smiths

    Song Lyrics:

I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
    In my life
Why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
Two lovers entwined pass me by
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
I was looking for a job, and then I found a job
And heaven knows I'm miserable now
    In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?
What she asked of me at the end of the day
    Caligula would have blushed
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
    And I naturally fled
    In my life
    Why do I smile
At people who I'd much rather kick in the eye?
I was happy in the haze of a drunken hour
But heaven knows I'm miserable now
"Oh, you've been in the house too long" she said
    And I naturally fled
    In my life
Oh, why do I give valuable time
To people who don't care if I live or die?

    Analysis:

Throughout the book, Mary Warren is submissive to whatever Abigail says. Therefore, this caused Mary to accuse many innocent people of witchcraft and putting their lives at risk. Abigail made it clear that if anyone exposes her she will hurt them since “...you know I can do it; I saw Indians smash my dear parents’ heads on the pillow next to mine, and I have seen some reddish work done at night, and I can make you wish you had never seen the sun go down!” (pg 30). As you can see, Mary as a gullible person doesn’t want to be in Abigail’s way and she would do whatever Abigail tells her. But we see that Abigail can be selfish and will do whatever it takes to get what she wants, such as killing Elizabeth for John Proctor’s love. Mary is aware that Abigail is manipulative and has evil intentions ,while she just wants to come clean, “Abby, we’ve got to tell. Witchery’s a hangin’ error, a hangin’ like they done in Boston two year ago! We must tell the truth, Abby! You’ll only be whipped for dancin’, and the other things!” (pg 30). Mary knows that she has to agree to whatever Abigail says because the minute she betrays her , Abigail will put her life at risk. In the song it says, “And heaven knows I'm miserable now/In my life/Why do I give valuable time/To people who don't care if I live or die?”.As you can see, Mary can relate to this because she is miserable living a life of fear and guilt for a person that doesn’t even care for her. Abigail will always choose herself and Mary knows that but she still protects her and follows whatever Abigail says in order to not feel Abigail’s wrath.

    1. I agree with this especially with the first few phrases of the song, “ I was looking for a job/ and I found a new one/ and heaven knows I’m miserable now”. This really shows how Mary is thinking at this moment because now that blood is on her hand and now that Elizabeth got taken away she feels miserable but she don’t want people to turn on her either

      Delete
    2. I agree with this because the song shows how Mary feels. She killed someone and she feels very guilty. When Elizabeth died, it was on her. She feels confused and sad. But she doesn't want to be the one who gets turned in. So she keeps lying.

    3. you did a really good job connecting the song with the book. Just like Taznuva said, this song does show how Mary feels after all. She is sad because he cheated on her with a little girl which is disgusting....

  3. Character: John Proctor

    Song: "Save me" by BTS

    Song Lyrics:
I want to breathe, I hate this night
I want to wake up, I hate this dream
I’m trapped inside of myself and I’m dead
    Don’t wanna be lonely
    Just wanna be yours

Why is it so dark when you’re not here
It’s dangerous how wrecked I am
Save me because I can’t get a grip on myself

    Listen to my heartbeat
It calls you whenever it wants to
Because within this pitch black darkness
    You are shining so brightly

    Analysis:

At the end of Act II, Elizabeth was taken away and put to jail all because of John. He must decide to confess or let Elizabeth possibly die or stay in jail. He feels really guilty about this and must really regret his affair with Abigail. I think this was expressed in some ways of feeling so guilty and alone that you just want to stay on somebody’s side and really be there in the BTS Save Me song. They say “I want to breathe, I hate this night/ I want to wake up, I hate this dream.” They said "Just wanna be yours" as John cheated on his wife and just want her to know that it did not mean anything and that he truly loves Elizabeth. He hates what is happening because it’s all his fault in the first place and now someone he loves might die because of it. Not only he sinned but now his perfectly perfect wife who never sinned in her life is put to jail for witchcraft

    1. At first I was going to disagree with you after reading the lyrics but I think I agree now. John Proctor was upset about his wife being taken away and I think he's feeling even more regretful now, and the song does capture his "loneliness". Also, the situation did take place at night and the song was talking about "dark" and "pitch black". Good job!

      Delete
    2. I agree that this song is a good depiction of what John is going through. He probably feels like he's in a nightmare right now and doesn't know how to get out, he has two choices but what if its not enough. Will he be the cause of his wife'd death?

    3. I agree with your analysis and song of choice, this song shows how John feels and what he is going through. John really did regret what he did and he should take action if he truly loved Elizabeth.

    4. I agree with this song choice especially the lyrics "don't want to be lonely, just want to be yours". John becomes very distressed and realizes his love for Elizabeth after she gets taken away and he will do anything to "not be lonely" and be with her.

Song: "Say Something" by A Great Big World, featuring Christina Aguilera

    Song Lyrics:
Say something, I'm giving up on you
I'll be the one, if you want me to
    Anywhere, I would've followed you
Say something, I'm giving up on you
And I am feeling so small
    It was over my head
    I know nothing at all

    Analysis:
By the end of the second act Elizabeth ended up giving herself over to the authorities because she was accused of witchcraft. She is trying to be strong for her family and herself but in reality she is afraid too. She has told John multiple times to confess that he committed adultery but still he doesn’t. If he did in fact confess they could stop Abigail’s power and save Elizabeth. But she doesn’t know what to think since she can't read John’s mind. Elizabeth wants John to speak up like it states in the song, “Say something, I'm giving up on you And I am feeling so small It was over my head I know nothing at all.” She wants John to say something because she doesn’t know how to fix this, since no one knows the truth. John is the key but she doesn’t know if he’s going to end up confessing, she is doubting him because of his words and actions.

    1. Love this song! I also like how you connected the song to the scene so well. All John had to do was 'say something' and she wouldn't have been arrested and everything would be normal. If this was movie, that song might have been the perfect one to play in the background.

      Delete
    2. I agree with you but I will say more that she has given up on John or she’s not really sure if he love her the way she thinks he do. After the affair she does not trust John as she did, so she wants him to prove himself before she quickly give up on him.

    3. First off good job Jessica I do agree with the choice in song and how you brought a great analysis out of it . You are right that Elizabeth does give herself up because she feels like there is nothing else to do. She wants John to try to save her, she wants him to say what happened between Abigail and himself. So good job on this .

      Delete
    4. This was a good song choice because it shows how Elizabeth feels trapped and small. The way out of her arrest and ultimately her death is if John decides to confess like you said. She wants him to "say something" and she doesn't know if he will. This portrays the lyric "i'm giving up on you".

      Delete
    5. I like this song! I think you did a really job with establishing a connection between the song and Elizabeth. If John would've spoken up and defended her by committing to his acts she wouldn't be put in the position she was in. She wants him to "say something" in order to put an end to this.

    6. I totally agree with the song choice that you choose, and your explaition if how elizabeth is just tired and trying so hard to try to have a happy family but John is preventing that for her . also, that she doesn't know how to fix the marriage is a good idea that she might be thinking.

  5. John Proctor

    Song: Words
    By: Aimer

(The lyric is a translated version of the original lyric)

Oh, how powerless the words "I love you" are
When even now, I don't want anything but you ...

Hey don't keep making the you that's inside me into a liar
I already can't cling to anything else but the you from that day ..
Those arms that held me, saying, "I'll never leave you alone again", are nowhere to be found
I couldn't get you to seek out the scars in my heart that I longed for you to caress ..
If we can ever meet again, I wish you'd at least made me hate you ...
Cause I've only ever see you smile gently.

In order to not fear believing in something, I wanted to become stronger
I didn't want to hurt you in desperation from my anxiety
I forget you, who lives like the seasons, and even forget how to breathe - I loved you
But happiness I'd finally found slipped from these hands without a sound
Oh, how powerless the words "I love you" are
When even now, I don't want anything but you ...

There was no "Goodbye" - without saying a thing, you just disappeared
After fulfilling me this much, you didn't even leave me your last words ...

Oh, how powerless the words "I love you" are
Even now, alone, I can't step a forward from here ...
To the dawning sky, I wish for a tomorrow unknown
"Farewell, My Dear" - I offer these words
So that I can move forward again
    Show less

    Analysis:
This song is related to John Proctor because in the book Elizabeth is being taken away and how John sounded like he renewed his love to protect Elizabeth from being taken away is related to this line “I already can't cling to anything else but the you from that day.” And another line related to John is that “ I wanted to become stronger. I didn't want to hurt you in desperation from my anxiety.” This is related to John because John's anxiety of his affair being revealed to show he is weak Elizabeth is being taken away and he wanted to be strong and prove her innocence and stop Abigail madness. And in the book John says “My wife will never die for me! I will bring your guts into your mouth but that goodness will not die for me!” page 68 Because of John's anxiety of being exposed by doing an affair with Abigail he is very anxious and also of how he was not able to reveal Abigail. Because of that Elizabeth was taken away being accused by Abigail.

    1. I agree! I think this song is also really good for this situation because "But happiness I'd finally found slipped from these hands without a sound" and "When even now, I don't want anything but you" conveys how regretful and powerless proctor was when Elizabeth was being taken away. Also, how he realized that it's his duty to protect his wife, even if it means he'll get in trouble.

Song: Scared To Live (The Weeknd)

    Song Lyrics:

When I saw the signs, I shoulda let you go
But I kept you beside me
And if I held you back, at least I held you close (yeah)
Should have known you were lonely
I know things will never be the same
Time we lost will never be replaced
I'm the reason you forgot to love

    Analysis:
At the end of Act II of the movie, John at first was screaming at Elizabeth not giving her any respect. Elizabeth was trying to tell John to do the right thing and get everything over with. When The Weeknd says, "I know things will never be the same", after Elizabeth was taken with the other accused witches, he then felt horrible and tried to be protective. John then tried to stop them when they already took her away from her children. Things will never be the same since John lost Elizabeth's trust and her life is at stake because of him.

    1. I do agree with what you have written Aithan mainly because John does feel a lot of guilt towards his wife being taken. He doesn't want her to die for his mistake. John had to change.

    2. This song can very much resemble John, as we can see within the lyrics of "I know things will never be the same." and him doing adultery led to that. In addition, "I'm the reason you forgot to love", can also be one because he caused her to being less affectionate towards him.

Song: Nothing Compares by The Weeknd

    Song Lyrics:
I seen darker days, tryna keep my faith (oh)
I sin too much to pray for you (for you)
Even when it's great, I still walk away
I couldn't even change for you (for you)
If you're the air I need, I'm dying just to breathe
I hope that you're not dying too (oh, I do)
    Tryna keep my faith
I sin too much to pray for you (no, no, no)

    Analysis:
John Proctor knows the sin he has made and the guilt he feels won’t leave his body until he confesses. I believe the lyric “I sin too much to pray for you” fits perfectly in this time period of sinning since he committed adultery with Abigail, which is a sin. John’s internal conflict is whether he should come clean to get rid of these accusations that Abigail had made about Elizabeth and others. He knows why Abigail is acting a certain way, however, because of the sin he committed, he can’t bring upon himself to confess his affair. “John — I think I must go with them. He cannot bear to look at her.” This indicates that John knows he messed up and that he should confess, but his guilt takes over him and he refuses to come clean. Will John ever confess his sin and truly apologize for what he has done to Elizabeth?

    1. I agree on your lyrics on the part, "I sin too much to pray for you". Adding on, I think that "I couldn't even change for you", can also relate to John Proctor because he tried his best to show Elizabeth that he is trying to change, but it just wasn't enough to convince her that he is a changed man.

      Delete
    2. I agree with your analysis and song of choice!! And I also love how you ended your reasoning with presenting a question. I do agree with on if John will ever confess because we all know John knows the truth behind Abigail but doesn’t want to come forward with it.

    3. I agree with you because the lyric "I sin too much to pray for you" is very related to John where he sinned because he was cheating and also "I couldn't even change for you" he even trying to changed because of his guilt and regret. Also "If you're the air I need, I'm dying just to breathe" this just shows that Elizabeth is too good for John because when John cheated he felt regret and because of that he hated himself thinking he does not deserve Elizabeth and when Elizabeth was being taken away he regretted even more.

    4. I agree with your song choice because it very much relates to how John has been acting towards himself. All the guilt and hatred is coming back when Elizabeth got taken. I really much agree that any The Weeknd song can be pictured with John.

    Song: Resentment by Beyoncé

Don't know how you gave another who didn't mean a thing, no
The very thing you gave to me
I thought I could forgive you, and I know you've changed
As much as I wanna trust you, I know it ain't the same
And it's all because you lied
I only give you a hard time
'Cause I can't go on and pretend like
I haven't tried to forget this
But I'm much too full of resentment
    I may never understand why
I'm doing the best that I can, and I
I tried and I tried to forget this
I'm much too full of resentment
I'll always remember feeling like I was no good
Like I couldn't do it for you like your mistress could
And it's all because you lied
    Loved you more than ever
    More than my own life
The best part of me I gave you
    It was sacrifice
And it's all because you lied
I only give you a hard time
'Cause I can't go on and pretend like
I tried and I tried to forget this
But I'm too damn full of resentment
I know she was attractive, but I was here first

Analysis: I think this song almost exactly represents Elizabeths internal conflict caused by John. I think it represents her thoughts at the moment and how she’s been feeling about this whole affair of john. “ I tried I tried to forget this I’m much too full of resentment” Before Elizabeth was taken into custody her and John were dealing with this issue. Elizabeth would bring it up and John would feel the guilt. In the end of the snippet of the song I made sure to quote where the song mentions “ I know she was attractive but I was here first”. Considering Abigail is the younger one as well as johns mistress, this could be a possible thought of Elizabeths especially in act II when she mentions Abigail wishes to replace Elizabeth. To take her place. To take her man. After John had presented Abigail with a lust fulfilled based “relationship” she now wishes to be his wife, but first she must get rid of the Elizabeth.

    1. I love the song choice because I feel like it perfectly resonates with Elizabeth. Her internal conflict is trying to come to end with her husband cheating on her. The lyrics “ Don't know how you gave another who didn't mean a thing, no,The very thing you gave to me” help emphasize how she felt that why was he able to confide in someone else when he had her. And I also agree that you think Elizabeth is jealous of Abigail.

    Lyrics:
    [Verse 1]
    I need another story
Something to get off my chest
    My life gets kinda boring
Need something that I can confess
'Til all my sleeves are stained red
From all the truth that I've said
Come by it honestly I swear
Thought you saw me wink, no
I've been on the brink, so

    Analysis:
This song can relate to Mary Warren because she also holds a secret just like John. She knows what Abigail is capable of and wants to keep it to herself that she is doing all these acts that's causing harm in Salem. Mary doesn’t say anything and keeps it a secret because she feels like if she said something, Abigail will accuse her next.
In the song, " I need another story /Something to get off my chest/ My life gets kinda boring/ Need something that I can confess/ 'Til all my sleeves are stained red", can relate to Mary because she needs to keep playing along with Abigail as of making different "stories" of how others are witches. Also, as she keeps making these stories up, its affecting her by setting up a mindset where if she should expose Abigail or not. She debates on this because it will bring her to accusation. We can see this in "The Crucible", " MARY WARREN, in terror: I cannot, they’ll turn on me—" (pg 68). We can clearly see the fear and the thought she had when John Proctor confronted her about exposing Abigail.

    Song: So Sorry by Feist
    I'm sorry
    Two words I always think
    After you're gone
When I realize, I was acting all wrong
    So selfish
    Two words that could describe
    Oh, actions of mine
When patience is in short supply
We don't need to say goodbye
We don't need to fight and cry
    Oh, we, we could
    Hold each other tight, tonight

Analysis:In the play, John cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail, but he didn’t really show his guilt in the beginning until Elizabeth was accused of witchcraft and was taken away. I think that’s the moment when he actually realizes how big the mistake he made, and how will this mistake impact his life. He can’t really imagine life without Elizabeth just like the lyrics “after you are gone, I realize I was acting all wrong.” His regret and guilt took all over, and he said “I will bring you home, I will bring you soon” (p77) when it comes to say goodbye to Elizabeth. I believe in that moment they both want to “hold each other tight” and move on, like how he yells in the end of act 2 “make your peace”.

Song: If I Knew by Bruno Mars.

Oh, oh, oh I, I know it breaks your heart
To picture the only one you want to love
    In someone else's arms
    But I wouldn't have done
All the things that I have done
If I knew one day you'd come
Now baby (now baby) now baby (now baby)

    [Bridge]
Oh baby, please, let's leave the past behind us
    Behind us

In Act II, there is a scene with John and Elizabeth. The tension was so thick between them, you could cut it with a knife. The tension was caused by Johns affair with Abigail. John blames Elizabeth for judging him all the time and pleads her to forget what happened. He tells her that all he's done since then was try and please her. When Bruno Mars says "Lets leave the past behind us" it really reminds me of that one scene where John says "Woman I’ll not have your suspicion any more". The tones between the song and the play are extremely different, but they are similar at the same time because both lines what the 'woman' in the situation to forget what happened.

    1. I think using the line "Oh baby, please, let's leave the past behind us" was a good choice because it shows how Proctor was begging Elizabeth for forgiveness. In addition, he repeatedly talks about how he wants to move on and forget the pass.

Oh oh, I would go through all this pain
Take a bullet straight through my brain
Yes, I would die for ya, baby
But you won't do the same

If my body was on fire
Ooh, you'd watch me burn down in flames
You said you loved me, you're a liar
'Cause you never, ever, ever did, baby “

In the Act 2, Elizabeth was testing John Proctor loyalty to her by asking him to testify in court against Abigail. He constantly hesitates against this suggestion, making Elizabeth think that John isn’t willing to sacrifice himself in order to protect her. However, later in the act, we see Elizabeth willing to literally sacrifice her life to give John the chance to confess about his sins. That is why Bruno Mars lyrics relate to this relationship because she “would go through all this pain”, but Proctor “won't do the same”.

    YouTube link https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-F9nCQtxkRw
    Lyrics :
I never meant to do those things to you

And so I have to say before I go

That I just want you to know

I've found a reason for me

To change who I used to be

A reason to start over new

    And the reason is you

I'm sorry that I hurt you

It's something I must live with every day

And all the pain I put you through

I wish that I could take it all away.

Analysis : John is feeling a lot of guilt for cheating on Elizabeth because he knows it wasn't a good thing to do and he is really sorry. He doesn't want Elizabeth to be hanged because of Abigail being an evil person. This shows his character development because he didn't want to tell her but now he is suffering because of it. John has to start over with himself and speak out with having his affair with Abigail to protect his wife and himself. John knows he must speak out. So the lyrics " And the reason is you " bring a whole new meaning to what John is going through because his wife is his reason. Their marriage means a lot to John and he can't just stand by and let her die. He wants to take her pain away that he caused. This is why John is suffering he isn't perfect. However he really does love his wife.

    I know I should've fought it
    At least I'm being honest

'Cause I know that I failed you
    I should've done you better
'Cause you don't want a liar

Now stay with me a minute
I swear I'll make it worth it, hey
'Cause I don't wanna be without you
    So one last time
I need to be the one who takes you home

I think the song One Last Time from Ariana Grande describes the internal conflicts that John Proctor is going through. John feels very guilty for having an affair with Abigail while he was married to Elizabeth. He believes that his affair with Abigail ruined his relationship with God and his wife. On page 42, John says to Elizabeth “I mean to please you, Elizabeth”. John is trying to be a good husband for Elizabeth when she is being so distant towards him. This relates to the song because the song is asking for forgiveness. “I should’ve done you better cause you don’t want a liar. Now stay with me a minute I swear I’ll make it worth it”. These lyrics show how the person knows that they messed up and wants to change for the better for the person. This is just like how John is willing to change and be a better man for Elizabeth as he is asking for forgiveness.

    1. I agree because John wants forgiveness about what he did to Elizabeth. The lines,” I gave into the fire/I know I should've fought it” can also relate to John because John gave into his lust and cheated on his wife with Abigail. ...

    Goodbye
Don't you miss me when I'm gone
    Goodbye
'Cause you're the fucking reason that I'm not around

    Analysis:

At the end of Act II, Elizabeth is taken to jail for being accused by Abigail. She must be thinking about John and what awaits her as time goes on. The lines,” Goodbye/Don't you miss me when I'm gone/Goodbye/
'Cause you're the fucking reason that I'm not around.” John was the reason that she was accused. John cheating on her with Abigail, made Abigail fall in love with him and wanting to be with him. Since Abigail wants to be with John and doesn’t want him to have anyone else will lead to her accusing his wife. Abigail feels jealous of Elizabeth which leads to her accusing her with her newfound power. Since Elizabeth is taken to jail, she must also think about her future. The lines,” Will you end my pain?/Will you take my life?/Will you bleed me out?/Will you hang me out to dry?/Will you take my soul in the midnight rain?” These questions might go through her head as she is heading towards her destination. Elizabeth might lose her life and there are many ways to kill someone during that time, whether it be hanging or drowning. She also knows the truth, which might also lead her to asking,”Will you take my life?” If the truth comes out then Elizabeth might survive but it is still unknown whether it will come out or not. If the truth is hidden she might be killed which relates to the line,”Will you take my life?”

Song: Somebody that I used to know by Gotye feat. Kimbra

    Link: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8UVNT4wvIGY

    Lyrics:
Now and then I think of when we were together
Like when you said you felt so happy you could die
Told myself that you were right for me
But felt so lonely in your company
But that was love and it's an ache I still remember
You can get addicted to a certain kind of sadness
Like resignation to the end, always the end
So when we found that we could not make sense
Well you said that we would still be friends
But I'll admit that I was glad it was over
But you didn't have to cut me off
Make out like it never happened and that we were nothing
And I don't even need your love
But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough
No, you didn't have to stoop so low
Have your friends collect your records and then change your number
I guess that I don't need that though
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know
Now you're just somebody that I used to know

    Analyze:
In the beginning of Act II, you could see the awkward moment of their relationship. The way Elizabeth was acting I was wondering if she was truly happy and if she felt comfortable and I feel like this lyric “Told myself that you were right for me/ But felt so lonely in your company” defines her thoughts because she is questioning if he is even there in her heart. Also, with the way that John was talking to Elizabeth made her feel like she is just a stranger to her. As the lyric read “But you treat me like a stranger and that feels so rough” I feel like when she got arrested she kind of gave up hope since she feels like no matter what Abigail will get her way and she will never see John then therefore the lyric “Now you’re just somebody that I used to know” would define that she has accepted her fate and she had never got to make it up with John.

    1. I think this song really depicts Elizabeth's feeling towards John in that she feels like she's alone in the world and he's not there to lift her up when he's supposed to. She has giving up on him becasue events keep occuring where he can support her and he doesn't.

Analysis: I think the song "New Person, Same Old Mistakes" by Tame Impala describes how John Proctor might be feeling. He feels guilty for his wife being taken away and the person accusing her, being the woman he had an affair with doesn't make the tension any easier. John knows he can call out Abigail's lie but scared of what will happen to his reputation once his affair is known to everyone in the community, it feels as if he's letting Elizabeth down and letting fear overtake him.

    2. I agree with your analysis, John knows he can confess about the affair to save Elizabeth but he's hesitating for his own reputation. He's taken by the guilt and gear. Song Lyrics:

I said I didn't feel nothing baby, but I lied
I almost cut a piece of myself for your life
Guess I was just another pit stop
'Til you made up your mind
    You just wasted my time

You're on top, I put you on top
I claimed you so proud and openly, babe
And when times were rough, when times were rough
I made sure I held you close to me

So call out my name (call out my name, baby)
So call out my name when I kiss you
So gently, I want you to stay (I want you to stay)
I want you to stay even though you don't want me
Girl, why can't you wait? (Girl, why can't you wait 'til I)
Girl, why can't you wait 'til I fall out of loving?
Babe, call out my name (say call out my name, baby)
Girl, call out my name, and I'll be on my way, girl
I'll be on my, on my way

    Analysis:

I believe that this song perfectly fits how Abigail was feeling when she was trying to convince John Proctor that they should be together. Abigail is very vulnerable and she thought of John as her new sacred lover that would help her fulfill her missing void. But in act 1 as Abigail flirts with him he seems to be over her telling her that they are through. Even though it shows that John still has a few lingering feelings for her. The song correlates with this because when it says , “Guess I was just another pit stop, 'Til you made up your mind ,You just wasted my time.” It shows how John was just using Abigail and how she feels as if she was deserted until he realized his sins and left her. While reading further into the play it shows how the affair that she had with John was a lot more one sided on her behalf. The song also relates when it says “ I want you to stay even though you don’t want me.” Which shows how Abigail has acknowledged that John does not want her but she is still into him. In act 1 Abigail says, “I look for John Proctor that took me from my sleep and put knowledge in my heart! I never knew what pretense Salem was, I never knew the long lessons I was taught by all these Christian women and their covenanted men!And now you cannot! You love me, John Proctor, and whatever since it is, you love me yet!.... John, pity me, pity me!”. Abigail is seeking the attention she was never giving and is in need for John to to recognize that even if it’s out of pity, she wants him to call out her name so she knows what they had between them wasn’t a joke but something real.

    Analysis:
At the end of Act II Elizabeth was accused of witch craft was turned into the authorities and put into jail because of John. John only cares about his reputation and didn't want anyone to find out about his affair with Abigail so he didn't confess to his sins and allowed Elizabeth to go to jail. He felt really guilty about getting Elizabeth sent to jail and now he has to decide if he should say the truth and admit his affair with Abigail. A line that really stood out from the song I chose is "I think I’ve lost it all, Everything comes on it’s own and leaves without a goodbye, At this rate, I don’t want to love anything". John really loved Elizabeth and truly regret having an affair with Abigail. He lost everything after cheating on his wife, he got Elizabeth sent to jail and might even get her killed. John is the one who started all this and he must put a stop to it, its all his fault Elizabeth might die and if he truly loves and cares for her then he will tell the truth and free his wife from jail.

As much as you accused me of clubbin'
I might as well have threw away my love
As much as you accused me
    I should have cheated

    Analysis:
This song relates to Elizabeth Proctor because her husband, John Proctor committed adultery as he cheated on her with Abigail in the beginning of Act II. This represents her internal conflict because this song is discussing how she should of cheated back and lied the same way he did. They have tried to work on it and she continues to pretend as if she forgiven him and moved on. John continues to feel guilty because of what he did and feels like Elizabeth hasn't forgiven him. I don't think she has I think they're just putting on an act due to the community they live in. But, deep down she knows that she wishes she were able to do the same thing he did to her to him. She's been loyal to him for a while and this is how he repays her. She feels humiliated now due to the mistreatment she receives from John.

    In the white light
    A hand reaches through
A double-edged blade cuts your heart in two
    Waking dreams fade away
    Embrace the brand new day
    .
    .
    .
    Lost in thoughts, all alone

Analysis: From the song above and the lyrics shown expresses the internal conflict of Elizabeth. In the beginning of Act III, she is in a dark cell with all of the other accused witches where she and all the others have lost hope for ever returning to the lives they lived before. In the song one they say “A double-edged blade cuts your heart in two. Waking dreams fade away. Embrace the brand-new day”. This perfectly relates to Elizabeth because she feels as though her heart has been cut in two when john couldn’t bring himself to confess to adultery. She has been broken down and reached her bedrock. She has lost all hope that she will ever see her children again. And when she enters the court, she will have to embrace the new day because it may be her last. In the song they also say “Lost in thoughts, all alone”. This is another conflict inside Elizabeth because she had john to protect her before but now, she is taken from him and is left alone to suffer the punishment and is doubting that john will fess up to what he did and save her.

Analysis: This song relates to John and Elizabeth proctor's relationship. John committed adultery, he cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail, a teenager. This song is showing how she is no someone you should play with. " "could it be that you are at a crib with another lady" in the book John was with Abigail and they kissed. The change in attitude of John made Elizabeth suspect something that went on. " I am not the one to sit and be played so prove yourself to me that I am the girl you claim" Since John cheated on her she feels the sus vibe of John. Thought you was mine, but you decided to be with him though
You took my feelings and just threw 'em out the window
Feel like it's too hard to fall in love again, no

Anaylsis: This songs relates to Abigial because she was vulnerable young girl and John proctor took adavantage of her, took her virignity and made her think that having sex with someone was love . When Kehlani says "Thinkin' we could put it back together, thought we had forever
You never see my point of view
Our connection is so severed, you don't show no effort
And I can't believe the lies that I went for" Abigial can relate to that she begged John to be with her she wanted a forever with him. Song: Never Gonna Give You Up
    Artist: Rick Astley

    Video: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dQw4w9WgXcQ

    Lyrics:

I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
    Gotta make you understand

    Never gonna give you up
    Never gonna let you down
Never gonna run around and desert you
    Never gonna make you cry
    Never gonna say goodbye
Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you

    Analysis:

At the end of Act II in The Crucible, after Elizabeth is whisked away, John Proctor appears a changed man. He bursts out a mini monologue expressing his feelings, making peace with the fact that he was at fault for the unfortunate events that were panning out right in front of him. He understands that he must get rid of his disguise and confess to his sins to be freed from his intense feeling of guilt by God. John is finally ready to break down the barriers he built himself. He is no longer the paranoid man, carrying a burden of guilt that was biting away at him. He is now a brave and devoted man who will not falter in the process of returning his wife to the safety of their home. The fact that Elizabeth was actually at a risk of being hanged rekindled the flame of love between them, a flame that had been dwindling as time went on. Their love was reignited and both knew that they did not want to be separated from each other. Hence, why John promised her he would not stop till he brought her back home to him and their three boys. In the song Never Gonna Give You Up, Rick Astley sings: “I just wanna tell you how I'm feeling
Gotta make you understand. Never gonna give you up. Never gonna let you down. Never gonna run around and desert you. Never gonna make you cry. Never gonna say goodbye. Never gonna tell a lie and hurt you.” This relates to how John feels towards Elizabeth after she was taken from him. While Elizabeth is most likely locked up in a cell waiting for John to come save her, he would want her to know that he is “never gonna give her up” and “never gonna let her down.” He is coming to save his wife and would not stop at anything until he has her as he promises to not give up on her or let her down. He set his mind on admitting to committing adultery with Abigail Williams and ruining his reputation, if needed, to get his wife back. She is his top priority. Once he manages to save her and gets the burden of guilt off his shoulders, he will promise his wife that “ he’s never gonna run around and desert her, never gonna make her cry, never gonna say goodbye, and never gonna tell her a lie and hurt her” again. If he does manage to save her, and bestow open her these promises, they will live happily with their children. Their love is rekindled and for the first time in a very long time, their house will feel like a home….

    1. I really enjoyed how you incorporated a song that was widely known as a meme so well in expressing the internal conflicts of John Procter so well.

  27. Character: John Proctor

Song: Charlie Puth - Cheating on You

    Lyrics:
Why did I run away, run away, run away? (Run away)

Oh, your love was everything, everything, everything (everything)

I know it's gettin' late, gettin' late, gettin' late (gettin' late)

But can I still be on my way, on my way?

John proctor cheated on his wife Elizabeth with Abigail which led to many internal conflicts within him and within his relationship with Elizabeth. "Why did I run Away" refers to John running away from Elizabeth with Abigail and the "running away" in this instance is him committing adultery. At first running away can feel freeing and make you happy but it usually leads to a lot of problems and challenges and it will affect your life greatly. "Why" is his thoughts of regret and guilt that John feels after cheating. "Oh your love was everything", I feel were the thoughts that John had after Elizabeth got taken away and arrested. This is his realization that he truly loved Elizabeth and that he wouldn't let her die for him, even if that cost him his reputation which was of great importance and the reason he didn't confess in the first place.

    1. I agree with you especially when Elizabeth was taken away and we can strongly feels the love from John to Elizabeth. And he not just feel guilty for causing Elizabeth in jail but also about the cheating of him and Abigail. He totally felt regret to commit adultery towards Elizabeth and starts a relationship with Abigail, especially after Abigail has charged Elizabeth.

  28. Song: LIKE I WANT YOU
    Artist: Giveon
    https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yNNMKN9BUmU

    Sometimes I wish you knew
    But I disguise the truth
I say I'm happy but I'm still stuck on us, mm-mm-mm
Does your mind play this game too?
    Think 'bout me and you
I guess I'll just pretend until it all makes sense, hm-mm-hm, hm-hm

See you face to face, I'm thinking 'bout the days we used to be
    But I can't make a scene, but I can't make a scene
See you face to face, I'm thinking 'bout the days we used to be
    But I can't make a scene, but I can't make it seem

Analysis: This song relates to John and Elizabeth proctor's relationship b/c John cheated on Elizabeth with Abigail, a teenager. Showing how she is unsure if she wants to forgive John or still hold a grudge against him b/c he is still trying to protect Abigail when Elizabeth tells him to turn her in. "Elizabeth, delicately: John--grant me this. You have a faulty understanding of young girls. There is a promise made in any bed--" John didn't want to turn Abigail in and if he really loved Elizabeth he would've turned her in and not have committed adultery.

    1. I agree with both your song choice, and your analysis. There exists an ambiguity between Elizabeth and John Proctor--a kind of awkwardness between them--as Elizabeth tells John she has already forgiven him and it is only in his head that he feels guilty, yet John is totally unsure as to whether Elizabeth has actually forgiven her; and given the recent events of the book, things have only started reaching "the boiling point", so to speak.

  29. Song: Tool - Eulogy
    Character: Abigail

    Standing above the crowd
He had a voice that was strong and loud.
    We'll miss him.
    We'll miss him.
    Ranting and pointing his finger
    At everything but his heart.
    We'll miss him.
    We'll miss him.
    We're gonna miss him.
    We're gonna miss him.

Analysis: I feel this song describes the situation of Abigail throughout both the first and second acts as she held much power in her hands as she accused people of witchcraft. Not only her, but much of the girls within Salem utilized their power over the "crowd" to deflect punishment for their actions--they pointed their finger at others, but not at themselves. And, I feel these accusations shall not go on for long and the girls, including Abigail, will face retribution for their actions.

    1. I agree that Abigail did have lots of power over the accusations. The song is aligned with that because she does stand above the crowd and everything that she says has strength because everyone believes her. It’s as if she’s a witch herself cause she points a finger and so does everyone else it like she has control over them all.

  30. Florence Chua

    Song: Sorry by Justin Bieber
    Character: John Proctor

    Lyrics:
“I'll take every single piece of the blame if you want me to
But you know that there is no innocent one in this game for two
I'll go, I'll go and then you go, you go out and spill the truth
Can we both say the words and forget this?”

    Quote from Crucible:
Proctor, with a grin: “I mean to please you, Elizabeth.”

    Analysis:
Proctor tries to be his best to please Elizabeth at the very beginning of Act two while he felt sorry about the betrayed between their love relationship. I think Justin Bieber’s Sorry can explain John’s inner feelings and thoughts very specifically, especially for the stanza that I had quoted because John has decided to come together with Abigail was because that he has a lot of feelings that cannot be told to Elizabeth. Since she was a very religious woman while John wasn’t and he strongly disagree with Parris and the Bible that was being told. He has his own opinion towards the world and the society he was in. He know that betraying Elizabeth was his fault but I believe that John was annoyed when Elizabeth was blaming him about the betrayal between him and Abigail. Although John has know that it was his fault but he knows that there was something wrong between their relationship, especially in the ways they view the society and people within their community. While John really tries to flip the past away since he was dissatisfied when Elizabeth mentioned about it because he was trying to bring this out of his life.

  31. Song: Where Did You Sleep Last Night?
    Artist: Nirvana
My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
My girl, my girl, where will you go
I'm going where the cold wind blows
In the pines, in the pines
Where the sun don't ever shine
I would shiver the whole night through
    Character: Elizabeth Proctor
This song relates to Elizabeth Proctor because she is about to be told a dreadful truth about her husband's infidelity. When Hale was questioning the couple to determine if they are abiding Christians, when stating the commandments, John forgets to mention infidelity. Elizabeth was already suspecting John. In the line where it says, “My girl, my girl, don't lie to me
Tell me where did you sleep last night”, it can relate to Elizabeth’s emotions because her husband did indeed lie to her and she was probably up at night wondering where he was. Also, when it says, “My girl, my girl, where will you go I'm going where the cold wind blows”, the cold wind can be a reference to the allegations of witchcraft. Cold in literature is identified with loneliness, dread, despair, etc. She’s going where the cold wind blows, dead bodies are cold.
