Did you enjoy reading The Crucible? Did you enjoy studying The Crucible? Why/why not? What was your biggest takeaway from the play? Do you think it should be read in high schools? Should it be included in the American canon of literature (books that "everyone should read")? Explain.

  1. Yes I did enjoy reading The Crucible b/c it allowed us to study another time period and it allowed me to understand "witchcraft" more, I first started researching it in 4th grade but we didn't go fully into dept on the topic. My biggest takeaway was that basically they follow behind the monkey see monkey do mentality meaning. Yes I think that The Crucible should be read in high schools and should be included in the American canon of literature book b/c it's trying to show that in crisis you should remain calm and not follow behind others.

    2. I agree with monika when she makes the point that we have learned from the book, I personally feel we did and we all can take at least one lesson from this book. A lesson that we will remember because when we first read about it it had shook us

  2. In my previous years of schooling I have, many a times, encountered students who would speak of the play and, many a times, I have added the crucible to my "want to read" list. Finally I had the opportunity to read it this year, even though it was for an English class, and it is safe to say it did not disappoint. The play was enjoyable to read, and the fact that we got to play roles and engage in the dialogue with other classmates made it all the more fun. (Engaging in heated back and forth with Kris on zoom was very fun). The play itself was never boring with plenty of action and drama in every Act from the start till the end. Judge Danforth, who I identified as every time I took part in the reading, was a powerful and really enjoyable character to play.
The biggest takeaway from the play by Arthur Miller is the connection of the Salem Witch Trials of the 1690's to the Red Scare and McCarthyism of the 1950's. The motif of blaming and accusations is omnipresent in both historical time periods, and it is clearly portrayed in Miller's The Crucible. The play should be read in high schools and should most definitely be included in the American canon of literature as it informs students and readers about an unbelievable historic event. The historic event of the Salem Witch Trials is portrayed through the play with actual historic figures of the time and fairly accurate information, such as the grudges that these figures held. The audience watches on as all the absurd events pan out and as the Salem Witch Trials take place. Through the play, the audience is basically taught a history lesson in a much more engaging and enjoyable manner. Furthermore, after learning about the time period of the Red Scare, which Arthur Miller lived in, the play can be read as an allegory and the connection of the Witch Trials to the McCarthyism becomes much more apparent. When the outside "cover-up" layer is shed, the author's purpose comes to light and a deeper comprehension of both historical events can be developed. Both events are very important in American history, and through the use of allegory, the play teaches the audience about the true nature of the Salem Witch Trials and McCarthyism.

  4. I enjoyed reading The Crucible. Studying The Crucible was interesting to me. Analyzing characters' tendencies and traits which all intertwined as I saw the ways each of them addressed the problem at hand, which were The Salem witch trials. When faced with a difficult situation as this was, the way people went about it revealed a lot about their personalities. My biggest takeaway from this play is that there is strength in numbers. The reason why it can be difficult to face adversity is because being alone allows vulnerability to creep in. It takes a truly courageous person to break away from the mob. I think this play should be read in high schools since there is character contextualization. During adolescence, it can be challenging to figure out where you stand in life and in society; I assume that high school students can benefit from reading The Crucible because it will push them to think to themselves the kind of character traits that they possess and what they would do in this sort of situation. It should be included in the American canon of literature because character contextualization is something that everyone should analyze. It emphasizes human flaws which are jealousy, revenge, envy, greed, etc. When these flaws are addressed, the awareness of it can humble people. In addition, The Salem Witch was a shameful part of American history that should not be forgotten. History repeats itself as the play was written as commentary for McCarthyism. History should not repeat thrice.

  5. I did enjoyed reading The Crucible since it really helps me to know more about the Salem Witch Trials, and provide more information for my US History class. It shows me a picture that was being view during that time period, and it was a time period that I've never live before. I really think that one phrase has makes me felt the point of the play and the Red Scare, which was "mob mentality". Mob mentality was a common thing that happen around us but we've often ignored it due to the fact of a common sense. Mob mentality is a word that I've learned while reading The Crucible, and I really felt that it makes me deeply think more about our society and surroundings where mob mentality is occurring. And so I really suggest anyone to read this play, either high school students or any adults because it really helps us view our space clearer and makes improvements and adjust towards a comfortable surroundings and hopefully our society. Compare to other play, I think that this play is very straightforward as a story or an allegory, it shows very strong sense towards the word mob mentality to me and has a big picture towards all the details that we have ignored about our surroundings. There is mob mentality everywhere, and we're not noticing it.

    2. I agree because Mob mentality was something that affect the people opinion leading it to the lives of other innocent that is being targeted. It teaches us of how we should just follow our own opinion instead of following other opinion.

  6. I really enjoyed reading this book. I remember reading it in 8th grade, however, we did not get to finish the book but I really enjoyed it. We watched the movie and I remember coming back home and re-watching it because I really thought it was interesting how people believe the little girls. I enjoy studying the crucible because it taught a lesson facing to encourage people to not jump into conclusion for things that they can’t control. Do not put a solution that hurts everyone, especially when it’s a lie, to a problem that you don’t have a reason as to why it’s happening. That’s what I learned from reading the crucible. You should definitely read it in high school and be should be included in the American Canon of literature because this book has a lot of meaning since is is a direct criticism of McCarthyism and it’s showing that this happened in 1690, and it’s happening again in the 1950s. The author is trying to tell people to have proper evidence because this is affecting somebody’s life, and eventually you are going to regret everything because you gonna look back and see how stupid you were. This is why I think you should be ready in high school and he should be included in the American Canon of literature because people need to learn about this so you won’t happen again in the future. If people learn more about the Salem witch trials maybe they will have a understanding as to why McCarthy and the girls was doing this, so the world can quickly dismissed it before anybody is hurt.

    2. I agree with you Abby because it also reminds me of a book and a movie that I use to watch when I first came to America, which was Utopia I think, I kind of forgot about the name of the book. However, it was really a society where everyone has to be living in the same as everyone did, which will help them form the utopia that the community they were aiming for. It was a great memory.

  7. At first I didn't like the crucible because the characters owned slaves, but eventually I started to like the story. I feel like it has really good messages that we can all use as a society. The central ideas I got from it was " have a mind of your own," and "stand up for what you believe in." As we all saw in the crucible, Proctor, Elizabeth, and Rebecca, stood up for what they believe in, instead of participating in those idiotic witch hunts. So they had a mind of their own, and died with their heads up high (literally). I do think that it should be apart of "American canon of literature" because I a lot of high school students enjoy this book.

  8. I must admit I did enjoy the Crucible by Arthur miller. I have always been a fan of reading plays and the fact that we got to act it out even if its through a zoom and the great enthusiasm expressed in this class made the play way more enjoyable than it would've been. I particularly enjoyed the heated arguments I would have wit Feras and I'll give him credit for keeping his enthusiasm up throughout the play. Before we made the connection with the play and the Red Scare I didn't give the crucible another thought, it just seemed like another drama/entertaining story. But having not too long made the connection between the crucible, learning the time period the author was living through and the affects the time period had on the author I strongly believe that we should read the crucible as an allegory, and it should be read throughout High schools nation wide. The messaging is too perfect to overlook even if its not instated in a nation wide curriculum it should be apart of the American canon of literature for high schoolers if the play style of literature is something you enjoy. The reason its apart of American canon of literature for high schoolers and not all ages is because you would be able to easily make the connection to the Red Scare. The play is just fine if you only look at it in the sense of entertainment but the connection is what you need to make to be able to really understand the author and why it was written.

  9. I did enjoy reading the Crucible for the most part because it gave me information about a topic I never really heard about before. It gained my interest to learn about it just to understand what America was like just a few hundred years ago. It is very interesting because it helps us learn how people acted back then when even the slightest of things went wrong. The biggest takeaway I got from it is that sometimes it is better to stay quiet then confessing to a lie. Now I firmly believe that the Crucible should be read in high school because it is a pretty dense play to read there is a lot of information that only high school students may understand. Now I wouldn't go as far and say every American should read it because most people wouldn't like the type of context that it has . I would say it should be given to a handful of schools across the entire US that want to teach their students about this type of things.

  10. I enjoyed reading The Crucible, because it allowed me to gain historical knowledge on events that happened in the America. Before we read this book, I had no idea what the Salem Witch Trials were it helped open my eyes to the different ways of life. I enjoyed the unexpected events that came to be as we read the book. The character Abigail held a lot of significance throughout the play. She was able to show how a average girl like her could get herself to gain so much power just by the use of her words. She was a mater manipulator, she helped the audience learn that mob mentality can happen in anyway shape or form in matter second. By biggest take away from this book is not to be fooled by the innocent. Mrs.Putnam is a major reason why this whole thing happened but throughout the play she acted as if she was unaware about certain things going on. Also not to judge a book by its cover. I say this because John Proctor was only thinking about himself and his reputation but towards the end he began to mature which I think changed the reader’s perception of John. I do recommend that this book should be read by high school students because it’s very interesting and I feel like we are mature enough to also understand that there are not actual witches. I don’t believe that it should be read by everyone because it’s not as beneficial to everyone if them are not learning about the Salem Witch Trials or using it as a Allegory to relate it McCarthyism.

Before we started reading The Crucible I had very little knowledge on what the Salem Witch Trials truly were but after reading and watching the play, I had a solid understanding of what it is. The play and book were very interesting because we could see how people had interacted with each other and how witch craft, reputation and mob mentality drove them to do many things. The Salem Witch trials was potrayed with very accurate information throughout the play and it should be read throughout high school's because there's a lot of important information and many things you can learn about from just reading and watching the play. Mob mentality even goes on now in our daily lives and not a lot of people notice that. But overall, The Crucible was a good read and it should be read throughout all high schools.

No matter which country or region the play is staged in, it reflects society to the audience. The historical context is the criticism of McCarthyism witch is the practice of making accusations without proper regard for evidence, the author used a more vivid method to write this play on this basis to attract us to read,if we only learn about the history context that would be boring. We should read it in high school because it can remind us not to make previous mistakes ,like don't say something without evidence it will cause big problems and don't cheat when we in a relationship or Marrige. 15. I was actually surprised I enjoyed The Crucible. At first I thought it wasn’t the kind of reading for me, but I ended up anticipating when would be the next time we would read as a class! I enjoyed The Crucible because this is something I have never read before. Not sure what genre this play would categorize in, but I would like to read more stories like this one. I also liked how we read as a class and we sort of acted it out as best as we could. It made me understand what was happening a whole lot more. Studying it was also interesting. Proctors conflict with himself what’s was I enjoyed studying the most. How he handled different situations and how his change of thoughts and feeling evolved. To me, Proctor is the most dynamic character. I also liked studying The Salem Witch Trials. Before this class, I have never heard of it and as tragic as this era was, it was interesting to learn about. I do think this should be read in high school because there are many lessons to take away from this. For example in a marriage, things won’t always be perfect. The Crucible should be considered a classic because as it tells a good story at the same time, it shines light on an event that has been hiding in the shadows for a long time.

  16. I really did enjoy the crucible. In the beginning, I found it boring because I thought, "Salem Witch Trials? That sounds like an old topic to talk about" But no, I was wrong. So many emotions and plots happened throughout the reading the book. I thought doing the lessons were fun to do and talk about. I most of all enjoyed our presentation makings of different topics, I felt as that was most achieved out of all my works so far. My biggest take away from this play is Mob mentality. I knew such a thing existed, but looking deeper into it made me realized that it's everywhere you go. Mob mentality can happen today. People can be convinced to easily to attack one person or group. Therefore, "The Crucible" should most definitely be read in high school. You'll get to understand history, how it was back then and different topics. It should be apart of American canon literature because of the characters, plots, topics and informative history. I felt like reading the Crucible has expanding my mindset much more about the world and how the past isn't so different than to the present.

I am more of the type to read criminal books because I am more into that. I am very happy I read a book that is different than what I like to read. I liked how there was a character with my name for me it made it more interesting and fun because I was able to read her part. As we read more and more the book would get more spicy like when John cheated on Elizabeth with Abigial, a teenager. This was all new to me and I am happy I heard about the Salem Witch Trials because it was a real life situation where people would get murdered if they were witches or had an encounter with the devil. Pretty Crazy! Watching the movie also made the book more interesting in the movie it was different than how it was in the book. It would be cool if the books we read in high school have a movie because we can compare the movie and the book. I enjoy studying Crucible because it taught how things are in the past and how people believe in superstitious thing more than other. the biggest takeaway was how ignorant the higher power are in the past because they think they are always right. And how they believe in superstitious lie affecting innocent people. I think it should be read in high school because the book is easy to understand but people need to be mature enough to be able to enjoy the story fully. 20. From the beginning of the year when this book was first mentioned I wanted to read it because of my huge intrrest in this topic. I didn't really know what to expect of the plot though since I didn't know much about the history. It is weird since everyone knows about this event and there are so many movies referrring to it, but nobody really knows the true history of it. I liked how it gave me a good understanding of the topic while still making it really intresting with all the plot twists and relationships between the characters like John and Abigail. I think it shoud be read in highschool because it exposes students to real conflicts of the world and the reality of how people act, it gives a great plot of how the world isn't always fair and somethings are not going to be justified however just they are. I think people shoul also read this because it has so many themes or lessons in it to learn from, it really is more than just a story but the story does really help make those lessons come to life. My key take away from this book was that history really doesn't change and things always have a way of repeating themselves, that's another reason ehy people should read this. They need to get exposed to this kind of information about the past and maybe they will chang, but maybe not who knows.

  21. Did I enjoy reading The crucible?? Yes, yes I did. Can I say I’m in love with the book? No not really, including the movie. I did however enjoy studying the Crucible because I feel like a lot can be learned, taught, or even lead to further investigation in this book. I found the book entertaining for that reason, that is why I had enjoyed it.My biggest takeaway from the play will not be the story about Proctor or Abigail or even the story. Not even the Salem witch trials. My biggest takeaway has been the lessons. The book introduced me to Mob mentality. Which is one of the main lessons that can be found in this book. Another lesson was the impact of religion and power it had on individuals. This book should be taught in high schools because I feel it can and will have a affect on student’s psychology. It will allow them to form opinions for themselves on how they interpret the book. I had viewed the novel from a psychological standpoint based on mob mentality and even the decision making of the character, when in comparison to others they may interpret it as a story of the Salem witch trials. It made me put myself in their shoes. It allows them to interpret the play for themselves, which as teaches them of Salem times. It can even help them interpret how good of an author Miller was and how he used the McCarthyism period in contrast to the play. I think everyone should have a shot at reading this book for themselves and see if it does anything for them, but I do not necessarily give it the title of being a classic because I do not feel it had reached such a high level standard of a novel/ reading. I didn’t consider it to be as good or out there as The Great Gatsby.

I did enjoy the plot of the play and my biggest take away from the play was how mob mentality plays such of a role. Mob mentality really influence many people and leads unrationally decisions to be made and many paid for that. Also that no one is perfect but if you make a mistake and is trying to do better, you are a good human. I do think it should be read in high school because there are major take aways from this play and its very interesting. Also because you can connected with our society and learn about history at the same time.

  26. Yes, I enjoyed reading and studying The Crucible more than I thought I would since plays aren't really my thing. I did learn how to see things from a character's perspective without actually knowing their thoughts like when we wrote Elizabeth's soliloquy. There were many plot twists and we got to know most of the character's in depth. It also taught me about the Salem Witch Trials and how they were based on lies and manipulation. My biggest takeaway was that mob mentality should be feared. People would choose feeling accepted over voicing their actual opinion, even if they know that they are in the wrong. I believe that it should be taught in high school because from it, we learn how to connect characters with real life events and history.

  27. In the beginning I didn’t enjoy reading the Crucible since I’m never a big fan of plays, so I started reading with a bias against it. But after we get to learn about the background of the Salem Witch Trial, it became way more interesting than I thought it would be. Studying about The Crucible allows us to explore the good and dark sides in humanity. Have we ever blamed things on someone under fear? Have we ever hurt others under mob mentality? Having classmates play characters from the play makes the story more vivid, and the lesson lets us dig deeper in the themes. My biggest takeaway is follow what you think it’s right instead of following the “right things’’ that others are following. The “right things” most people believe in may not be the right things, like the justice the village believed in is just a fraud created by a few girls. We should always have our own sense of right and wrong, and evaluate things objectively before you say or do anything. I think it should be read in high schools, because it helps teenagers to realize the harm of mob mentality. And it definitely should be included in the American canon of literature, because the Salem Witch Trial and the McCarthyism are very important to American History. Most people barely know about these events, and I think they deserve to be learned by more people.

  28. I did enjoy reading The Crucible because I feel like it’s a great way to teach people that lying and trying to get something that you want for your own selfish reasons can lead to conflict. It also allows the reader to compare The Crucible to society now. I enjoyed studying The Crucible because I learned more about how women were treated back then. My biggest takeaway from this play is that fear can lead a person to do anything, whether that’s good or bad. I believe this should be read in high schools because, like I said before, teenagers might try to compare to today’s society. It should be included in the American canon of literature because I feel like some people can relate to the book in terms of feelings. I feel like the play really demonstrates how human nature affects us in many ways.

  29. I did enjoy reading the crucible because I feel like it taught many lessons that us teens can take away from. One of the many lessons was lying for youre own selfish reasons doesn't take you anywhere it just starts conflict. I did enjoy studying the crucible because i liked breaking it down and analyzing each part of the book. My biggest take away is that a society can really change how everyone acts and thinks, this was seen in the crucible with the town of salem. I do think it should be read in high schools so teens can analyze it and really get the deeper meaning behind the book.

  30. I enjoyed reading the Crucible as it is a retelling of a classic trope: that of the unjustified witch hunt exacerbated by irrational behavior and resentment among a population between themselves. It showcases wonderfully how mob behavior can take place when a single meta-narrative--a single enemy, a single story--can give adequate excuse for the otherwise inexcusable actions that the characters partake in. It is a story, a fictional one, but nevertheless tells a very real phenomena of people who are lost and confused about reality, who do not know nor make sense of the reality around them; and so they attribute all wrongdoing and manufacture a narrative to place blame and channel their resent and anger.
