  1. Cream:

    A line of vivid imagery:

We met at the party. It was strange because it was held at a winery and I wouldn't expect her to come to the bar with us. It was dimly lit and her dress was a flagrant red that could pierce your heart and ran darker than blood. The rest of the evening was spent with her, but i was warned by the fellow party patrons. She was a young woman but had a tendency to be filled with greed, and only desired the power and wealth that comes with rich husbands. I stlled played along with her like i was intersted, she constantly bragged as though she earned a huge fortune going on about how her dress can change colors withh different lighting, designer bags and how she got whatever she wanted but had recently divorced with her husband. Probably not the first one. and that really ticked me off, how she can just miniplate men to her will and lied about how she gained her fortune. I pulled her by her hand onto the Terrence. words were exchanged and I ultimately left her speechless and walked away hoping i never saw her again. but if she told the truth about anything it would be her dress, it turned into a cream color under the moon light. seems fitting because her true colors were acknowledged there.

    Question C:

Quote 1:“ Her face, above a spotted dress of dark blue crepe-de-chine, contained no facet or gleam of beauty but there was an immediately perceptible vitality about her as if the nerves of her body were continually smoldering.”

Quote 2: “ Her personality had also undergone a change. The intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur. Her laughter, her gestures, her assertions became more violently affected moment by moment”

Question D: In the great Gatsby the color cream symbolizes a false sense of wealth. Myrtle that wears cream gest whatever she wants from her lover but she is not by any means on the same level as him. Just because she has money to an extent docent mean she was accepted because she lacks the basic etiquette they share, class and attitude of toward others making her an outcast to an extent. This is extremely important to the book because it greatly helps us understand myrtles character and her feeling when tom and his friends are around, she always acts as though she has to prove something to everyone and boast about the wealth she is apart of but that makes her an outcast.

I wake up every morning doing the same thing I do every day
    Not cooking, not cleaning,
    just wasting my time away,
As if nothing has a meaning

I have everything that I want,
And I could get everything that I touch,
    Life is just nonchalant
    Nothing interesting as such

Like a blank sheet of paper,
I wish there was something greater

    C. Quote 1: “I’m stiff,’ she complained, ‘I’ve been lying on that sofa for as long as I can remember” (13).
Quote 2: “All right,’ said Daisy. ‘What’ll we plan?’ She turned to me helplessly. ‘What do people plan?” (14)

    D. In the book, The Great Gatsby, the color white represents having no desire. The people living in the West end has old money, so they do not have to work and can get anything that they wanted. They have done everything and now life is just a bland thing to them. In the quotes that were stated, it sounded like they did not know what to do with their lives. Jordan is just going to people’s houses and laying and Daisy does not know what else to do with her life. The importance of the color in the novel is that it shows why someone behaved and it can reveal what a person’s personality can be. This can make the reader predict and question things which can make them more interested in the book.

    B. Poem
All the money in the world
    but nothing else to do
money doesn't bring a person happiness
    but only boredom

    Every morning is the same
    Wake up
    No need to cook
    No need to clean
but just sit down disinterested and dull

I already have everything in the world
No need to ask for anything
    each day goes by
    every single second a waste.
    Pure beauty,
    wealth,
    elegance.
all for the cost of boredom

    C. Quote 1. "I'm stiff," she complained, "I've been lying on that sofa for as long as I can remember." (Daisy 13)
Quote 2. "Do you always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day of the year and then miss it? I always watch for the longest day in the year and then miss it." (11)

    D. The color white in The Great Gatsby represents no desire, wealth, and pure beauty. Everyone in the East egg has old money so they never have to work for it, they could spend it on anything they want too without ever asking. They did everything they've already wanted so now they have nothing else to do, everything is dull and boring to them now. In the two quotes stated before, Daisy lays down on her sofa all day long with nothing to do and she doesn't know what to do with her life anymore. The color white represents Daisy's beauty as well, her wealth and good looks. Its an important color to remember because it shows how different everyone is, who has desires and who does not, and it makes the readers question if things will change, if they finally have something to do with their lives.

    B. A Line of Vivid Imagery:

The young woman was standing on the sidelines at the ball she attended. She watched as everyone danced and laughed in the lively room. The room was enormous with gold lining and gold tapestries on every wall. There were butlers at every entrance catering to the guests. The room was fit for a Queen. She was merely invited because her sister knew the host. However she didn’t want to be there for she might dread encountering a certain someone. The dance ended so the woman went on into the open hallway that was also a floating bridge made of white marble. You could look out from it to see the mountain range and she was doing exactly that when she heard footsteps. She wouldn’t think anyone would come out here since it was boring compared to the party going on in the other room. She looked up at the person and her breath sank into her chest, it was the man she was hiding from the whole time. Their eyes met and she felt a flutter in her chest. His eyes were bluish green like the crashing waves of the sea. He waltzed closer to her and she froze, the first thing he said to her was how enchanting her emerald dress was and how taken he was by it. Nevertheless that was nothing compared to her desire for him.

    C. Quotes

“…he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward and distinguished nothing except a single green light…” (21)

“Instead of being the warm center of the world, the Middle East now seemed like the ragged edge of the universe so I decided to go East and learn the bond business.” (3)

    D. In the book The Great Gatsby the color green symbolizes desire. The people that live in the West Egg all have desires they want to achieve so they all have a purpose to fight for. Nick comes from money but he wants to make his one money and business. Gatsby also desires something greatly as shown in the quote, he has a deep desire that is yet to be revealed. The importance of this color in the book is that it can help characterize characters and their wants also shape their personality. In addition it makes the reader question what different character’s desires are such as the one and only Gatsby.

    B : Short story ( made up )
It was a nice Saturday morning and the sun was just rising and it was beautiful. The green of the nature and the mixture of it with the bright yellow the sun gives off just looks amazing. I walked out of my house on to the dock by the lake near my home, and I just sat there. I was relaxing and just gazing at the distance hoping to eventually meet someone with similar dreams to me. I just sit there and would admire the birds flying together and the fish doing what fish do. About an hour or so later I got up and went back inside and the green reflecting off the walls was a nice touch making me feel good. Eventually I went outside to the town to a book store and found a book that I would enjoy and this woman came up to me and asked me about it and I told her about it and she then picked up another copy. I went to check out and she came and checked out that book too. I was minding my own business walking home and the same woman came up from behind me and started talking about life with me and I would come back and talk about my view of life as well. I eventually went home telling her Ill be back at the book store tomorrow if she wants to talk and she went off her own way. I then sat down under a green tinted light provided by sun shining on my windows reading the book only to once again remember my desire.

c: Quote "...he stretched out his arms toward
the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I
could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced
seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green
light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of
    a dock. " ( 24)
D: The color green represents desires or the wanting of something in the Great Gatsby. We see this because Nick wants to make something for himself and Gatsby wants things but we don't exactly know what he wants.

    Desire.
All the money they have and they want more
they want an escape from reality
a way to build a name for themselves.

    Desire.
They want to work and gain their right
the right to say it's their, the right to say it was earned.

    Desire.
    They believe I have everything
but I think I can have more.
    Luxury, wealth, privilege.

    Desire.
    I desire to be more
    I desire to merge
    I desire to grow.

    C. Quote
"He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock." (24)

    D. In the novel the color green represents desires. One example of this is Nick as he wants to create something of himself and earn money his own way. He lives in the West Egg so this means the people of the West Egg are mainly represented by the color green. With the color green so far it has helped shaped the goals of the individuals that live in the West Egg. Gatsby also lives in the West Egg but it is unclear what his desire is but, hopefully it'll be discussed eventually. With the color green you can see they are trying to achieve what it said to be the "American Dream" because they are working in order to gain more, even though they practically have it all. With doing this they can continue to build their social status in society. Overall, the color green represents the desires and motives of the people from the West Egg.

A shade and not a color,
Like a sheet of paper with nothing on it,
Like a person with no motivation,
    Just nothing,
    Just emptiness,

    To do nothing,
    A blank mind,
    With everything in the world,
    Nothing left to gain,
    Nothing left to achieve,
    Just slowly wait,
    Until I am gone,

    No motivation,
    No desire,
    No wants,
    No thoughts,
Just an empty person full of emptiness

    C.
“The windows were ajar and fleming white against the fresh grass outside that seemed to grow a little way into the house… twisting them up toward the frosted wedding-cake of the ceiling, and then rippled over the wine-colored rug, making a shadow on it as wind does on the sea.” (Fitzgerald, 8).

“What do people plan?” (Fitzgerald, 11).

    D.
The color white might symbolize emptiness and no desire since Daisy and Tom were people who had no desires or wants and were empty and had a lot of white objects like clothing. Both Tom and Daisy have so much money and have everything they could ever ask for, and that is part of the reason why they are so empty and have no desire or motivation, Daisy also showed many signs of not having wants such as the time where she asked “what do people plan?” The importance of the color white is to show how the people are like and how they are, like first impressions.

  8. THE LAND OF THE GRAY

    In the land of fog
    In the land of smoke
    In the land of smog
The gray people awaken to the darkness
A shining sun hidden away by gray clouds
Leaving the land deprived from the rays of hope
    -
The men of the land arise,
Dressed in their loose gray outfits
    They head off to work
    Embarking on a journey
In this never ending gray routine
    -
    Now make no mistake,
The lives of these men ain’t splendid
    Their lives ain’t swell
And they certainly aren’t living the lives they dreamt
    For their families are struggling
    Their health is deteriorating
They are barely making their daily bread
    -
At work they are cramped into specific areas
    With no sunlight all year
Here they spend most of their life
Slaving away to make just enough money
Coughing, headaches, sicknesses are all side effects of the job
The gray jobs that all these gray men in the gray land
    Succumb to despite their dreams
    Despite their original desires
Which pulled them towards this gray land
    -
    Little did these men know,
The land of the gray was not the place for desires
With the smoke and dark gray clouds
    Concealing everyone's desires and motivations
For the land ignites the flame
The flame which burns desires away
And all the men become identical
    Everyone’s goal shifts to survival
Regret builds up inside every man
Wishing that he had never left his home
    His desires,
    His passion
    His willingness to live
    -
The men of the land of the gray
    Are the world’s lost souls
Souls once so full of life
    Now laboring in humongous jails
    Packaging and putting goods together
    Manufacturing products with machinery
The machinery that sucks the life out of them with every use
    The men are sick men
    Imprisoned in a life-sucking self-harming daily routine
With no options to go anywhere else
    The men are dead men
    Slowly digging their graves
Slowly pushing open the lid of their coffin
With every usage of the damning machinery
In the soulless, dull and dreary, aphotic land of the gray

“This is a valley of ashes- a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens, where ashes take the form of houses and chimneys and rising smoke and finally, with a transcendent effort, of men who move dimly and already crumbling through the powdery air” (27).

“Occasionally a line of grey cars crawls along an invisible track, gives out a ghastly creak and comes to rest, and immediately the ash-grey men swarm up with leaden spades and stir up an impenetrable cloud which screens their obscure operations from your sight” (27).

The color gray in The Great Gatsby by F. Scott Fitzgerald symbolizes dullness and lost desires in the context of the setting of the Valley of Ashes. It is a land without sunlight due to the clouds of smoke and ashes that emerge from processes inside the factories that require combustion of materials. With toxic air, due to pollution from factories, the whole land is extremely harmful physically and psychologically. The story takes place in the 1920’s when America was in the process of transitioning to industrialization and so the Valley of Ashes represented the new urban cities developed next to factories to house large numbers of workers. With this urbanization, people from all across the country and the world traveled to these urban cities, full of desire and hope, looking for jobs in the factories of America’s growing cities. The color gray represents the feeling those immigrants and travelers get upon arrival in one of these cities. Once they become enslaved to the factories, work for very low wages with lots of safety hazards, become deprived of sunlight, and live in cramped, crowded and underserviced buildings any desires they once had disappear. All their hopes and motivations become eradicated and their life gets sucked out of their souls. Once people lose their desires and willingness to live, they become gray lifeless things working away till they die. Fitzgerald uses the colors in his writing to represent the different social classes and people around him. He too was from this period of time and had seen the rich as well as the poor during his lifetime. It gives his perspective on the class systems of America which he appears to not be very fond of. The usage of colors as symbols also add an author's message when all the colors and what they symbolized are put together like pieces of a puzzle. It is a great example of the usage of the literary device of motif.

    D) The color white symbolizes the people who live in the East egg. These people have been born into their wealth. Therefore, they have no desires or goals in life. All they have is the wealth that they were born into. Life is so boring to these people since they have nothing to look forward to. According to the Great Gatsby, Daisy said "I've been lying on that sofa for as long as I can remember". Although she has all the money in the world, she is still laying down full of boredom. There isn’t anything true to these people besides wealth. Money is all these people could see.

d)The color white symbolizes lack of desire from the East egg. This color divides the east egg and the west egg. The residents in the east egg are people that inherited their money from past family members. Their whole lives they have been living that rich and luxuries life. They have lived and done everything they wanted at an early age that they have reached at point where they don't know what to do anymore.As. a result, their lives are boring since all they do is lay around and drink from the lack of desire they have. In the book the Great Gatsby, Jordan says "' I'm stiff ,' she complained, 'I've been lying on the sofa for as long as I can remember" (Fitzgerald, 13). This illustrates how Jordan had nothing to do that all she did that day was laying around the house. They have all the money in the world and their lives are boring . This shows the lack of desires and motivation they have since they can have anything they want without hesitation.

How many desires do you have?

    There are so many worries.

    Why is there desire?

Because I want to live a better life

Want others to look down on

I want to be the one looking up to the crowd.

Appropriate desire is the motivation to work hard.

Excessive desire is the flame that burns life.

It's okay to want to live a good life, work hard slowly.

The green light of life is turned on with my own hands.
(c)"He stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward – and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock." (FitzGerald 24)
(d)The color green represents desire and the West egg is the side with new money in the novel.People with desire and motivation have a specific thing to making money in West Egg and have expectations of themselves. 12. Grey:

This shade is a mix of white and black,
It’s gloomy, it’s shady, it's the color of a rat.
This is the color of a smelly, grotesque and rotten food
This is how you feel when you're in a bad mood.
It’s the color of the sky when the sky is crying,
It's the color of someone dying.
This color represents poverty and oppression,
Like the life of the lower class, it's full of depression.
But this is the life that the people of the valley of ashes were born into,
They could never go higher than the middle class, even if they wanted to.

    Quotes:
-“This is a valley of ashes—a fantastic farm where ashes grow like wheat into ridges and hills and grotesque gardens where ashes take the forms of houses and chimneys…” (26)
-“But above the grey land and the spasms of bleak dust which drift endlessly over it…” (26)

D- This color symbolizes poverty and the lower class in The Great Gatsby because everything in The Valley of ashes is grey. The reason why it's grey is because it's gloomy and many people there are poor. This color is important because it shows the drastic difference of the higher class and the lower class. The higher class people are partying all day, while the people in the lower class are working hard to earn money. This huge difference also shows American society today because there are many homeless people and working class people, but there are billionaires and trillionaires taking advantage of them.

  13. A. Colour: Green

    B. The colour green exists on the higher end of the visible spectrum, with blue and violet succeeding it. It is a vibrant colour that pops out at you upon sight of it. The reason for this could be interpreted as it literally popping out, since it is constituted of higher amounts of energy--relative to the other colours in the electromagnetic spectrum; thus, with speed and intensity, bolstered by a higher concentration of energy, it can be no wonder that such a colour would be so vibrant and eye-catching in our purview. And it is also no wonder that such a colour--and the other colours higher on the spectrum such as blue and violet--would be associated with things that humans perceive as pleasurable and good: money, luck, fortune, or even royalty.

    C. Quotes:
    1. "But I didn’t call to him for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone—he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and far as I was from him I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward—and distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness."

    D. And building off of Part B, this vibrance intrinsic to the colour, the higher amounts of energy exercised by the increasingly sporadic nature of the photons themselves as they wish to disperse of this energy--these attributes of the physical colour green give new light to the symbolism employed within the quote above: that Gatsby is a man of desire, a man of activity, a man who still has aspirations within him that he wants to achieve, a man who still has life left within him; a man whose soul, whose aspirations, whose determinations exhibit a vibrance, energeticness, and spontaneousness like that of the colour green itself. He has not dispersed of his "energy"--i.e., he has not become tired of life and hit his potential--unlike those individuals living in the mansions of the West Egg who have reached their own entropy; who now live life in a state of nihilistic hedonism aspiring to do nothing and be nothing as they have achieved everything that they could be--they have dispersed of their "energy"; but not Gatsby, he has life left within him and he sees green--he sees the potential of new opportunities and of him being greater than what he is, now.

    B. The color green in our society represents beautiful nature. It consists of lovely flowers, bright colors that shine bright. In "The Great Gatsby", it represented as desire. Some desires is love and it can be compared to how nature is. Many would look at one flower as a bright color but looks like it's near its death while one may look with a dull color but very alive. They would choose the bright flower for it's look and how it can affect them than the strong flower.

    D. This color represented desire and how he felt alone and didn't have the light that brought him out in society.

“They were here—and they accepted Tom and me, making only a po-

    D)
The color white in The Great Gatsby means a person's life with no desire. The white in the book are used to describe people who have inherited old money and have everything they have. They are on top of the social class. An example of white is Tom and Daisy both of them have inherited old money and have everything they need. They had no desire for anything. The importance of this white color is to show the difference between social class. Those who do not desire probably have everything they need. It is to separate different people with desire and new money that represent green mostly to those who have old money that represent white.

    B.

    The word White
    Doesn’t sound clean?
    Doesn’t it sound nice
You would think it brings brightness to ones mind
    Fear not
    It brings empty champagne bottles
and houses filled with people I have never seen before

Chasing the White light beings two different worlds
One filled depression and one filled with a high that only alcohol can bring
Does anyone else go through this?
Why do people yearn for this life?
    No ambition
    No compassion
Just to wake up each day and to do it over again

    C.

“Sometimes she and Miss Baker talked at once, unobtrusively and with a bantering inconsequence that was never quite chatter, that was as cool as their white dresses and their impersonal eyes in the absence of all desire” (Fitzgerald, 12)

“ ’Toms very profound’ said Daisy, with an expression of unthoughtful sadness” (Fitzgerald 13)

    D.

In the Great Gatsby, The color white represents no hope and no motivation. Also it represents wealth. People who are represented as the color white, are most likely people who inherit money. Which means these people have not worked for the money they have. Because of this, they have no means of starting work or being ambitious towards something because they always had everything handed to them. I guess you can be optimistic and say it’s not really their faults, however they are grown adults who can in fact change. The character Daisy is symbolized as the color white. Her looks, her wealth, her beauty, and most importantly her personality is what maker her represents the color. Being Beautiful, having and endless amount of money thrown in your pocket, and the having no desires.

The reference to the color of the "white" palaces are described as fashionable.

    D. The white color in The Great Gatsby symbolizes the emptiness and non-desire the people of East-Egg have. The importance of the color is that when ever it is mentioned and used to detail something, it does not mean clean, it means to be empty.

    B. Poem
    Nothing more but glam,
    Nothing more but loneliness
It's all about the wealth and status.
What else could there be for us?
    It's all just emptiness.
There's nothing for us at the end of the road,
And I don't need your pity.
All I need is you to bow down to me.

Don't think there's anything bright for us here
Everything is just filled with darkness
Look pretty, act dumb, have no desire
    And you're the color

    C. " Across the courtesy bay the white palaces of fashionable
East Egg glittered along the water, and the history of the
summer really begins on the evening I drove over there to
have dinner with the Tom Buchanans." (8)

    D. In the Great Gatsby, the color white symbolizes zero passion. The people who Nick represents to be "white" have no desire for anything, especially Daisy. The people who have all this money are still sad and feel lonely. White also represents status and wealth. The color white is important in the Great Gatsby because we see white as something beautiful and bright, however, it seems like the novel portrays it a different way--a darker way. White is to represent emptiness for those who have everything.

  19. A:Color: Green

    B:POEM by Lana Santiago

Green is the color of trees
Green is the color of fields
Green is the color of money
Green is the color of Greed.

C: “Involuntarily I glanced seaward-distinguished nothing except a single green light, minute and far away, that might have been the end of a dock. When I looked once more for Gatsby he had vanished, and I was alone again in the unquiet darkness.” (Fitzgerald 21)

D: In the novel The Great Gatsby written by F.Scott Fitzgerald we are introduced to two different eggs which can be represented by two different colors. The west egg is represented by the color green, the egg where nick and Gatsby reside and the east egg is represented by the color white which would be where Jordan,Daisy, And Tom reside. There is a difference between these two groups of individuals and that is money. East egg has old money and West gains new money, money they work for. Although it can be agreed upon that both sides are wealthy. It seems as if nick and Gatsby have characteristics that make them more of a human than the other side as they have wants and needs and have more honest characters than the east egg. The color Green in this case can represent money, BUT the color green here is simply for the representation in the difference in people who are both wealthy. The single green light at the end of the dock, the dock that separates the west from the east represents people like nick and Gatsby have desires natural human desires besides money unlike the people on the east who are soulless and are filled with emptiness even though they seem to have everything since they withhold so much wealth. The color green is here for the representation of the people who have desires, wants, and souls.

    B:Poem
    Pureness is white
    Cleanliness is white

    Emptiness is white
    Absence is white
    C:
"Sometimes she and Miss Baker talked at once, unobtrusively and with a bantering inconsequence that was never quite chatter, that was as cool as their white dresses and their impersonal eyes in the absence of all desire"(15).
    D:
The color white represents lack of motivation and emptiness but it also represents wealth and old money. People in the East Egg are represented by white because they have no desire for anything. They already have everything due to their inherited money. This also is what separates them from the other social classes. Since they don't have to work hard to earn their money it leads to having no wants or need rendering them purposeless.

  21. A: Green

    B: Poem
    Green is happiness,
    Green is wealth,
    Green is dream.
With green all happiness is automatically true.

C: "But I didn't call on him, for he gave a sudden intimation that he was content to be alone--he stretched out his arms toward the dark water in a curious way, and, far as I was from him, I could have sworn he was trembling. Involuntarily I glanced seaward--and distinguished nothing except a single green, minute and far way, that might have been the end of a dock." (Fitzgerald 20-21)

D: The Green light is significant to both Nick and Gatsby b/c they have desire, wants, and hope unlike the ones who live in the East Egg they have no desire, wants, nor hope of any kind. But I would say that the green light more symbolizes Gatsby's dreams and hopes, b/c while he's standing on the doc it allows him to have hope for the future that he will achieve the goal that he is reaching for.

  22. A. Cream White

    B.
    Poem

    I look in the mirror
    What I see is inferior
    Hoping to break the barrier
    I pretend to be superior

    The suit I wear
    No one has seen anywhere
    Hoping that they care
    Yes I’m aware
    I’m not truly superior

    C. Quotes

“Mrs. Wilson had changed her costume some time before, and was now attired in an elaborate afternoon dress of cream-colored chiffon, which gave out a continual rustle as she swept about the room.”(30)

“With the influence of the dress her personality had also undergone a change. The intense vitality that had been so remarkable in the garage was converted into impressive hauteur.”(30)

    D. Explanation

The color cream is used to symbolize people that are trying to flaunt their wealth, so they can be perceived as high status when they actually can’t afford the lifestyle. The color can be used to reveal a person insecurity about their status. In addition, by a person’s object being cream it expose a person true materialistic , narcissistic character traits and beliefs.
